I asked if they'd ever calculated the true cost of using second hand parts. They have to be bought, transported, stripped down, cleaned, checked, buried in a peat bog, bored/honed/ground as appropriate and possibly painted. Had they then compared this against the cost of new parts from Toyota, especially as not all secondhand parts can be rescued and some parts may need scrapping?
No they hadn't. After a bit of research it turns out for them its cheaper to buy new parts whilst they're still available. For people not costing their time its slightly different but there are attractions and advantages of dealing with new components.
They hadn't thought of supplying one of the off the shelf flywheels either that take the 5E crank bolting pattern and 4E-FTE clutches.

5E-FHE short block, £ 1350 inc. vat. New block, crank, rods, pistons and bearings. If you were building it to turbo, you'd probably want lower compression pistons at £ 450. Total £ 1800ish. Maybe the 'new' unused 5E-FHE pistons have some value?
Bbois engine - £ 130
collection, either courier or petrol - £ 60?
rebore - £ 100
new pistons - £ 450
crank grind - £ 100
new bearings - £ 150
this is £ 10 short of £ 1000 already
Labour - I reckon that by the time you've stripped an engine and extracted the major parts, cleaned them enough to inspect them, had the block rebored, crank ground and oil galleries cleaned out, rods checked for twist and ovality, given the outside of the block a good scrub with a wire brush on a drill and painted the block, given it a really thorough flush out and started the rebuild in order to the same level as the block, the you're possibly at 25 hours and at even at a modest £ 30/hr this is £ 750.
So if you have to buy forged pistons for the new block, its roughly the same cost for all brand new parts or rescuing old parts. Plus all the time saved. And the advantage of using brand new parts rather than secondhand...
