The 5E-FHE head should be the same as a 4E-FTE head - so I would leave it as is.

ToyTuning can compare numbers on the EPC if they have doubts.

I have been offered a freshly rebuilt 4E FE head for 80 delivered, the seller reckons if i put in some 5E FHE cams it'd only need a set of valve springs to bring it up to FTE standard. I'm thinking if I can provide them with a ready to roll head it'd save a lot.
Can anyone confirm if it would work and if this is all I'd need to do to it?

According to the Toyota EPC the cylinder heads are common between 4E-FE and 4E-FTE (1989-1994 certainly) including valves and valve springs.

I know 5E-FHE and 4E-FTE share the same head.

I think it would work.

Obviously you would use 5E-FHE cams but they would need to be shimmed to suit the new head, you can't assume the shims will be right from another head.

Right cheers, Is fitting the right shims as simple as getting 5E FHE ones or are they something that would have to be made/modified and fitted by a professional?

Got the FMIC yesterday! Had a test fit today and it's pretty much spot on!

Only thing I've noticed is the lower rad hose connector is pointing straight at where the turbo's gonna be. Can't really move the rad further to the n/s because of the FMIC outlet. Is it possible to custom make and weld on a new end tank for the rad, with the connector at the other end? Or should I get them to fabricate a new rad? either way, it would also prevent the concern about the downpipe melting the plastic end tank...

that cooler looks great. brilliant layout.

my civic rad is mounted more the passenger side due to the mounting of the turbo. but i have the cooler pipes going underneath the crossmember.

tricky one. perhaps a s shaped rad pipes? can still get to the lower end using custom pipes.

Shims are sold by Toyota in 0.05mm (from memory) increments. You need to measure what you've got and you may be able to use the ones you have, but the others can be bought from Toyota. A good Toyota independant specialist should have stocks and should be able to make an allowance for old ones you don't need against ones you do.

Slight update - got my chav-tastic numberplate today! Should help airflow to the intercooler. I may just put a print out of the DVLA's page about small plates on import cars incase I get pulled over by the fuzz.

Also continued work polishing up my 4E-FTE rocker cover. Think I'm gonna spray it black and then file smooth the toyota logo and details to make them shine. Watch this space...

Got my mani today! its the SPS mild steel mani with race spec coating to prevent corrosion. Hopefully a bombproof bit of kit that has proven advantages.

I've spent today heatwrapping it, along with the down pipe, and used the remaining heatwrap on as much of the exhaust as possible (I reckon it'll end up just past the back of the engine bay).

This means I now have everything and hopefully toytuning will finally give me a date to take it down. I've only been asking them for two months...

I ran out of patience with Toy Tuning. Dave Burwash now has a workshop, called them, spoke to a very helpful bloke called Darren (apparently Tim knows him) and after an actual real-time telephone conversation he said 'bring it down whenever, we'll fit it in' I suggested monday, they said great. Only thing is the slam panel can't go on till next week so the car should be ready to make its final n/a journey a week on monday. Woo!

If only I'd given up on ToyTuning a month ago, it would be done by now...

My number plate is cracked, so good excuse for replacing it. I looked at the DVLA site, but it really wasn't clear what to get. What did you order, and what did it cost? Your number plate looks fantastic! I'd be very grateful to know what spec. you ordered.

Sarah, I got it from www.aplates.com - it measures 329mm by 120mm and cost 18 inc. delivery. Only thing is you might have legality issues - I have the excuse that a square plate would obstruct the intercooler. You'd probably be best getting a 330mm x 150mm (still smaller then the 180mm plate that came off my car) plate from halfords, as this is the standard Jap size.

Tim, hopefully will be down a week monday, maybe later. pm me ya number I'll let you know when I'm heading down.

Gav, actually Darren told me something you might find a comfort - he reckons they've dynoed 5e turbos and found no bhp gain. Took me rather by surprise, not least given someone on the starbo forum posted before/after dyno readings showing a 27bhp gain with a TD04 on both runs.
I would have thought though that the larger capacity engine would enable the turbo to spool up quicker giving an advantage at lower revs (maybe someone can confirm this?), but not neccesarily increasing peak bhp. At least I bloody hope thats the case, given all I've already invested...

And yeah, northern meet is required soon I reckon. Still haven't got round to meeting bboi who's just up the road either...

I did that to mine and instantly didn't like the look. The black/Silver combo sounds great, but it just looked lairy and american to me. Sandblast the whole thing, then polish the stripes/letters and give it a good shine with Autoglym metal polish. The non-polished parts go a dark grey colour, Looks really tidy IMO

Thanks for the information and advice. I'll go and talk to Halfords.
